New York Yankees aging
star Alex Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod has been declining quickly with his
performance and health. A-Rod was always known for his MVP caliber play through
the years and his home run hitting. Now he’s just an overpaid disaster. It bothers
me to say this because he’s one of my favorite players to ever play the game,
but I call it how I see it and he’s not getting it done.
You have a player that
is getting paid $114 million in the next 5 years at the age of 37 and he won’t
be even playing this upcoming baseball season. He’s going to be nursing a
recovering hip surgery that just took place this month. We all know when A-Rod
opted out his contract and resigned with the Yankees for a whopping 10
year/$275 million, we knew this was a big mistake. Not that it was a lot of
money because I don’t think any player in sports is worth that. But was
Rodriguez going to be great or just even serviceable until he’s 42 years old. This was a bad contract and A-Rod is showing us that after the 2009 World Series Championship, which he one handedly in most eyes won it for the club. Ever since then he’s been hurt and his skills have been declining drastically. You have players like Derek Jeter, which is the true star of the New York Yankees have turned around father time. Jeter looked last season as a MVP candidate while A-Rod looked lost and couldn’t find the ball to hit.
Seeing Rodriguez only hitting 18 home runs and hitting for an decent .272 batting average just made me realize that the Yankees are in a lot of trouble as long as he’s the main attraction on this team. I give the team a lot of credit for putting guys like Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano as the focal point of the team. What this does it takes a lot of the attention off of A-Rod and his bad play and his huge contract. But fans and the media aren’t stupid. New Yorkers can read between the lines and know that the Yankees are trying to put up a smoke screen to protect Rodriguez. But we see right through it.
