A-Rod: Struggling with Health and Performance

New York Yankees aging star Alex Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod has been declining quickly with his performance and health. A-Rod was always known for his MVP caliber play through the years and his home run hitting. Now he’s just an overpaid disaster. It bothers me to say this because he’s one of my favorite players to ever play the game, but I call it how I see it and he’s not getting it done.
You have a player that is getting paid $114 million in the next 5 years at the age of 37 and he won’t be even playing this upcoming baseball season. He’s going to be nursing a recovering hip surgery that just took place this month. We all know when A-Rod opted out his contract and resigned with the Yankees for a whopping 10 year/$275 million, we knew this was a big mistake. Not that it was a lot of money because I don’t think any player in sports is worth that. But was Rodriguez going to be great or just even serviceable until he’s 42 years old.

This was a bad contract and A-Rod is showing us that after the 2009 World Series Championship, which he one handedly in most eyes won it for the club. Ever since then he’s been hurt and his skills have been declining drastically. You have players like Derek Jeter, which is the true star of the New York Yankees have turned around father time. Jeter looked last season as a MVP candidate while A-Rod looked lost and couldn’t find the ball to hit.

Seeing Rodriguez only hitting 18 home runs and hitting for an decent .272 batting average just made me realize that the Yankees are in a lot of trouble as long as he’s the main attraction on this team. I give the team a lot of credit for putting guys like Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano as the focal point of the team. What this does it takes a lot of the attention off of A-Rod and his bad play and his huge contract. But fans and the media aren’t stupid. New Yorkers can read between the lines and know that the Yankees are trying to put up a smoke screen to protect Rodriguez. But we see right through it.

Will Chris Paul Re-Sign with the LA Clippers?

In a city where the Los Angeles Lakers are king, the Clippers having been making their own name in the city as a team to be reckon with. They are headlined by catalyst and MVP candidate Chris Paul. However, this is a season of worries that’s going on with the club. They have some things that they are trying to figure out quickly. For one they have a coach in Vinny Del Negro that’s in his final year of his contract. Secondly, how far can this team go this season in the playoffs? Lastly, can they re-sign their franchise player Chris Paul?

The L.A. Clippers I feel holding out a contract extension on Del Negro is on purpose to see if CP3 will re-up on a new deal. If Paul doesn’t stay, that will mean Del Negro will be gone as well. Here is the great news for the Clippers as some concerns have been put on the table for you. They will most likely keep both the coach and Paul for the upcoming years. Mainly because CP3 loves the way his team is flowing and winning right now; even though they have a 4-game losing streak, that’s not changing his mind right now.

We can’t forget that the Clippers are the only team that can pay him top dollar and give him the most years on his deal as part of the collective bargaining agreement. They can and will offer him a 5 year/$108 million deal that will keep him in a Clipper uniform. Many questions ask if that will be enough to keep CP3 in L.A.
For Paul to stay with the club I believe he wants to see how far they can go into the playoffs with Griffin as his superstar side kick. People don’t really understand that the playoffs can make or break a resigning of any contract. Yes, most of the time in sports it’s all about the green dollar. But there are instances where players do want to win titles as well and why not get paid too? I believe Paul is one of those cases where he wants to win and get paid. But can this team go deep into the playoffs.

They are definitely a championship contender in the league. I always believe that if you’re in the playoffs, you’re a contender period. But will that be enough for the team to persuade Paul into resigning. I don’t think so! Paul has a lot of pull and calls the shots for the team as he works with upper management to put the right players and personnel on this team. I guess we are all waiting to see if he will stay or go to another team this summer. Do you think CP3 will stay or go?

Manny Pacquiao Knocked Down and he Shouldn't get Up

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao has definitely met his match going up against Juan Manuel Marquez of last month to where he was knocked out cold by him. They both have met in four total fights which are extraordinary to say the least. Marquez always felt that he was the better fighter and was robbed in the previous fights but not this time. Marquez showed the world that he was the better and tougher fighter. We’ve never seen Pacquiao get knocked out like this from a devastating blow.

The knockout that “Pac-Man received was kind of scary to many of us. As a boxing fan we love to see a knockout and just a good fight but we aren’t barbarians either as human beings. We don’t want to see a fight die in the ring or have brain damage due to a hit to the head. Pacquiao really looked like that he was severely injured in that fight. Many people were asking me if Pacquiao can come back from it and regain his dominance in the sport and I said he can.

But here is the problem with this. Pacquiao can come back and fight some other good fighters out there, but does he still have something to prove at 34 years old? I don’t think so. He’s won titles after titles against some of the best in his prime. He’s no longer in his prime and needs to think about his long-term health because once boxing is done that’s where a boxer starts to really live.

Pacquiao has made millions of dollars in this sports that has made him a very wealthy man. But how much is enough in boxing where your health can deteriorate through the punches that one faces through the years of fighting. We can’t forget that Pacquiao is a leader in his country the Philippines and is a congressman. His country really needs him and his resources that can help there poverty and natural disasters that they face. I personally think that he should retire and move on with his life because he has more than boxing after it’s all said and done.

That being said, I don’t see him walking away from the ring especially on how he lost to Marquez by knockout. Boxers have that competitive pride and ego that they want to walk away on their own terms. In a recent article former champion and retired boxer Ricky Hatton felt the same way I feel about Pacquiao walking away and retiring. I don’t even want to get into the Mayweather-Pacquiao potential fight now because they just waited too long for us as fans to really want to see it. Also I think and always felt that Floyd will eat him alive in the ring. I guess it’s just me.

Do you Feel bad for Kobe? I Don't!!

Los Angeles great Kobe Bryant has been in the league for over 17 years now and he’s seen the highs and the lows of the NBA. This year hasn’t been any different. With his team in a losing spree right now with a record of 17-24 in the Western Conference, they just look awful. There play isn’t Laker basketball and “The Black Mamba” always has something to say about it.
Does Kobe ever keeps his mouth shut and goes through the motions of the season win or lose? Heck no, he doesn’t because he can’t help himself to be the center of attention. How can I feel bad for a player that has done everything in his career to throw players under the bus; may I say Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Shaquille O’Neal just to name a few.

I really never felt bad for a multiple world champion that probably goes down when retired as a top 5 player of all-time. So now, that won’t be me feeling sad and sorry for Bryant. What he needs to do is just be Kobe and play his game and try to lift up his team even when down. Don’t get me wrong guys, I love Kobe Bryant and what he’s brought to the NBA since 1996, but lately I’ve been seeing his true colors come out in the forefront.

Is the D’Antoni system good for Kobe and the Lakers? I would say at times it is but they need Howard and Gasol to play much better. Coaches always get the blame for when the team looks bad and loses. But when do we look at the players that are on the court and make them accountable for their play? We all know D’Antoni and his offensive play that he loves to run but this team isn’t good for that system; point blank.

Bryant needs to stay in the gym and work on his jump shot because he’s looking a bit old in his last couple of games. His shot has been way off and it might just be his frustrations on the court. The funny thing is that I remember Kobe being the same way when Shaq left the team back in 2004. I just feel sad that many players don’t want to play with Kobe because of his anger and complaining behavior. Your thoughts on this?

The Tribute: Typical M.J.

Back in Michael Jordan’s heyday he was known to abuse the opposition with fashionable posterizing dunks and this was no different. One of my favorite players of all-time Patrick Ewing was the victim of this tribute. Ewing’s back was turned but Jordan knew what to do when he seen the opportunity. This is what M.J. lived for in the 1980’s and 90’s.

The Game of the Year will be a Slugfest

Today’s NFL AFC Championship Game won’t just be another playoff game on the books, but it will be something that we’ll remember for years to come. The Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots don’t like each other and it’s very evident as shots are fired back and forth from both teams on who’s the better team. We can’t forget as well if the Ravens lose this challenging game Ray Lewis will be done and retired for good.
Last year’s lost in the AFC title game to the Patriots has the Ravens looking for revenge and maybe blood to go with that. They were one big play away last year from going to the Super Bowl to face last year’s champs the New York Giants. But that was spoiled by the Pats and they loved every moment of it too.
Tom Brady & Co. lives for these games against their arch rival Baltimore Ravens. We know today will be a super slugfest and might look like a Super Bowl game itself. I will be glued to the TV and enjoy every minute of this game. The question is, who has more to lose in this game? I would say the New England Patriots do because many people are looking for them to go back to the Super Bowl and maybe clinch a fourth title for Brady and Belichick.
Each team knows that it won’t be an easy game today and everyone has to come out with everything they got. Little mistakes can cost a team the game and both are looking for an edge. War is what we’ll see today and nothing less. Ray Rice knows the Patriots will be looking for the run so there defensive will pick up intensively. So this means that Joe Flacco will have to use his strong arm and throw it down field to win the game. However, Brady has something to say about that. He will be looking to pick the Ravens apart with his short and long throws to his receivers.
My prediction is that the Ravens will finally get over the hump and beat the Pats today. The game will be very close though but the defense of the Ravens will step up and get the job done. Flacco has to stay away from those interceptions that he’s use to throwing and just let the game come to him and everything will be okay in Massachusetts.

Not a Man we can Ever Trust Again

You guys know I’m not a big cyclist fan, but Lance Armstrong is a big name and its ground breaking news, so I’m bringing it to you in my style of fashion. Armstrong finally came out to the world and admitted that he’s been doping for years and his Tour de France titles all contributed to his performance-enhancement usage.
For years there have been cyclists coming out and expressing their frustration towards Armstrong for cheating the game and contending that he isn’t winning fairly; and they were all right. There have been whispers and reports coming out for years of Armstrong maybe cheating the sport to win those titles, but the country was amazed of how a cancer survivor can come back and wins so impressively.
Now it all has come and hit Armstrong like a bulldozer as he has to finally let the world know that he’s a cheat and how ashamed he is. I mean, this comes as no surprise because the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has stripped him from everything and banned him for life from the sport. So I think that Armstrong lost it all and now feels that it’s the right time to speak up. Heard the interview where he says his son made him finally come out and come clean. Seriously?
I highly doubt that a teenager can make you change your tune after all the years of lie, cheating and stepping on others to get to the top. With endorsement deals on the line and millions to lose, a child just doesn’t have that power for a cheat like Armstrong. When money and everything you use to have is gone then you decide to come clean. I will say, too little too late Armstrong! The only thing I can say about this man is that he founded a great foundation called Livestrong that has changed many lives due to cancer. His foundation has raised over $475 million.
Armstrong now has a lot of heat on him and not just from the public and sport but the people he damaged emotionally and financially. They all will be looking for retribution from Armstrong. There will be many lawsuits to follow in the coming weeks and I don’t know if Armstrong can stand the hands of time. We also know that this man won’t be trusted ever again in sports and maybe life. What do you think of this scandal?

Let's Change the MLB Hall of Fame System

The Hall of Fame is a prestigious place to be for a player when his career is over. Well the MLB has found ways in recent years to make it watered down and have some great players left out of Cooperstown. For the last 75 years the MLB has been doing its way of voting to see who will make the class and those days seem to be behind us. Today we have a new era in baseball and that’s the steroid era.
With the 2013 MLB Hall of Fame class announced last month, we just had a feeling this class would a be memorable one and I don’t mean in a good way. Some names that we’ve grown to love in our lives are Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. They were all in this year’s class and all have been rejected by a large margin of votes by the writers.
I’m not surprised at all because they all have been in connection for using steroids or other performance enhancement drugs. The way it looks these players will never get into the Hall because of the old system in place. I’m not saying what these players were accused of wasn’t wrong but I just don’t feel drugs made them great stars. If they didn’t use steroids I believe they would of still been great but maybe not home run record breakers.
A lot of people I talk to are saying they should never be in the Hall of Fame because they cheated and aren’t as great as the numbers show; and I say seriously! Think about it; let’s use a player in Derek Jeter which is a great player. Do you really think if he took steroids or any other drugs that he’s going to hit 40 plus home runs? I highly doubt it. The drug does give you a lift, but I think talent can outweigh the roids.
The MLB should have the right voters in place such as former players, announcers, analyst and writers to place their vote on who should go into the Hall. Some of these current writers are just bias and don’t know the game as we think. The standards should even go up as well. As it is now if you have 500 HR or 300 wins you’re in. Let’s change this because more players are hitting this milestone and many can’t get in. Not a fan of cheating and steroid use but the last two decades have been flooded with this. So let’s put these guys in the Hall in the next few years and put some kind of disclaimer on their plagues.

Where are They Now: Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield

Evander Holyfield is considered by most one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all-time.. The 50 year old fighter was a hard hitting slugger in his prime and many didn’t want to get into the ring with “The Real Deal”. They knew that they would be in for a long night. Holyfield wasn’t the kind of fighter to back down and gave everything he had once the bell rung to start fighting.
The once 4-time World Heavyweight Champion of many titles, which includes the WBA, WBC and IBF titles. He’s the only one in boxing history to do it that many times. Holyfield was born in Alabama and raised in Atlanta, Georgia where he currently resides. That’s where he first found the love to box and let me be real, that he was the best to do it decades ago.
Holyfield was ready to go pro at the age of 21 in 1984, where he started as a light heavyweight and then to move up and dominate as a cruiserweight. Once the change happened in weight class, that’s when the victories followed and the boxing world took notice of this young contender. Now becoming champion wasn’t so far-fetched for young Holyfield.
Holyfield always wanted to fight the best and the best wanted to give him a shot because they knew that the fight would be a big purse for them. But what they didn’t know was that they would go on to lose to him while seeking the big dollars. Through Holyfield’s career, he would go on to win bouts against boxing greats Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Larry Holmes, George Foreman and Michael Moore.
Now to get into the most controversial fight of Holyfield’s career was the rematch with Mike Tyson in 1997, where he got half of his ear bit off. Tyson knew that Holyfield was too much for him as he seen the year earlier, but the champion wanted to give Tyson another shot at the title and this is what came out of it. I remember watching that fight and I was saying “is Tyson really ripping his ear off”. I think us all were in that mindset at the time. That’s something we’ve never seen before in fighting or any sport at that.
After that fight Holyfield kept on pressing forward with fighting many other such as the likes of Lenox Lewis. Looking back at Holyfield’s career we can say that he never wanted to stop what he loved doing and that was boxing. Holyfield was mainly criticized in his career for taking breaks and coming back to fight the big fish and not being a consistent fighter. I just think that Holyfield like many other great ones stayed in the game too long.
Look at it, Holyfield finally came to conclusion the end of last year that he should walk away from the sport he loves at the age 50. Now that’s old to me! The only sport that I would say he could keep going is golf and some even say that’s not a sport. But I’m not going to get into that one. Today Holyfield is fighting financial and child support battles.
Years ago we’ve heard whispers about him being broke and his Atlanta home being foreclosed on by the bank and how he couldn’t pay certain debts. This is a man who made a fortune and also a man that spent a lot as well. Having eleven children by six women doesn’t help as well because these women will seek a lot of money a month from you because of your profession. Holyfield is now seeking another comeback into the sport. This was one of my favorite boxers growing up. I really enjoyed seeing him slug it out with opponents. What are your greatest moments of Holyfield’s career?

A Troubled Young Man

Troubled Sacramento Kings star center DeMarcus Cousins is a troubled young man that needs some help. Since being drafted in the NBA in 2010 as the 5th overall pick, he’s been nothing but a trouble maker and toxic in the locker room. I hate to say this about a young 22 year old guy that sometimes doesn’t know what he’s doing to his career and life. I don’t think it’s because of the one and out deal that college player’s face. There are many young players that come into the league at the age of 19 and once younger that wasn’t getting into the trouble that he’s been getting into.

Is it the fame and money? It could be, but that’s what you sign up for when you go pro. The problem with the NBA and many other professional sports out there is that they see the signs of players like this and sometimes they dismiss them because they think that they can change or that they won’t do that in there league. Well I’m here to tell you that they will definitely be a problem as Cousins exudes those actions in the league. I’m just confused why the league, team and David Stern haven’t reached out to Cousins and demand him to undergo anger management classes because this man is angry as hell.

I don’t know what he’s been through in his life but he’s in a special position that many young and older guys wish that they were in. This is a young talented player from the University of Kentucky and if changes in his behavior can be a superstar center. If not, he will be ousted from the NBA and become a 25, 26 year old player that is broke and looking for work. I’ve seen it before and I guess Cousins doesn’t think it will happen to him, but I can tell you he’s going down that road right now. When you see him play you can see some bright spots with him but when he hears something that he doesn’t like; get out of the way because he will let you have it.
The Sacramento Kings would be crazy to keep him beyond this year. I see them shipping him off to another team by the deadline. I’m hearing the Boston Celtics and other teams right now but nothing concrete. It’s been years where you’ve heard of a young talented player like Cousins suspended at least 3 times in the season and it’s still young. This is a shame and I hope people will reach out to him and try to get him on the right path. I just hate to see this become more of a mess then it already is. Do you think Cousins will have a long career in the NBA?

Keep the Wives out of This KG

As many have already known by now New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony will not participate in Thursday’s night game against the Indiana Pacers because he was suspended by the NBA for one game for seeking out Kevin Garnett in Monday night’s loss against the Boston Celtics. I think the suspension was called for because as a player, not matter what was said you don’t go after a player in the visiting locker room and definitely not at a team bus. I understand Melo was mad; I got that but as a player and a man you have to know there will be consequences that come with it.
The rumor going around the Internet and all the blogs is that the notorious trash talker KG said a remark to Melo about his wife LaLa Anthony, by saying she tastes like “Honey Nut Cheerios”. If this is true shame on Garnett! As a man you don’t say those things to another man and don’t think that nothing will happen to you after those comments. I don’t have a problem with some trash talking in the games but a comment about somebody’s wife is just a no no in life. Guys look at retired legend Gary Payton, this man couldn’t stop talking on the court but he was never in any controversy about going overboard about someone’s family or personal life.

I’m just a bit shocked that Garnett would pull a stunt like that being a great player for so many years and a veteran as that. I just expect those behaviors from somebody like a DeMarcus Cousins; which is a complete nut case. That’s just what I think haha! But on another note, Melo will be missed tomorrow as we know the record of the Knicks when he’s not in the lineup which is 3-3. What really bothered me was hearing that Anthony is a thug and all that garbage. Let me ask you, if anybody said that about your wife what would you do? I think I can answer that one people. Many would want to take somebody’s head off. You don’t go there with the wife; you just don’t.
Melo felt that he was done wrong and I feel that the punishment was right but I really hope that the NBA will investigate a bit more on Garnett and give him something in return. Well let’s say an eye for an eye.

The Last Go Round: Ray Lewis

Ray Lewis is considered the most celebrated Baltimore Raven to ever put on the uniform. Last week Lewis announced to the world that after the season is over he will be putting down the helmet and retire. He has been an enormous key to the success of the Ravens since 1996 when he was drafted from the University of Miami. Lewis when it’s all said and done will be a Hall of Famer and one of the best defensive players ever. Yesterday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts was such an emotional game for the team, fans and Lewis. They wanted to make sure that they would give him a farewell to the fans of Baltimore with a win; and that’s what they did.
The Ravens defeated the Colts 24-9 to a one sided game to which they didn’t know what they were getting into. This game was all about Ray Lewis and his retirement. The Ravens wasn’t going to let anyone spoil that. The nerves were really high for Lewis as you’ve never seen before. We’re so used to seeing Lewis composed and ready for battle, which he was but there was a different pep in his step. He definitely gave fans a show like no other coming out of the tunnel. It was electrifying to say the least and you can feel the energy in the air.

The Ravens played a great game against the Colts and will meet the Denver Broncos and the great Peyton Manning next week to see who will advance to the AFC Championship game. The odds are against the Ravens. But I will say to not count of this team and they seem that they will turn it up next week with Joe Flacco understanding what’s on the line and his legacy as a star quarterback of Baltimore. This is his time! I think that Lewis is content will his departure and what he’s brought to this organization and to the game as a whole. Lewis knows that there would come a time when enough was enough and the game had to end. I can tell you guys that I’m happy for him and enjoyed the moments that I’ve seen him play. His intensity on the field and attacking the quarterback, I don’t think we’ll see many players like him after.

In sports and life, there are only a few players like Lewis that put on the uniform and perform at a high level that we can say “Whoa” who the hell is this? It all caught me by surprise that he was going to retire because we’ve been so use to him being a Raven that we thought it would never end. I’m just happy that the New York Giants don’t have to go up against him anymore. He’s become a nemesis for my team. Farewell Ray! Was this the right time for Ray to walk away?

Nothing Super in the City of Angels

The Los Angeles Lakers are having a disappointing season by far and it doesn’t help that everyone seems to not be all on board. You have Kobe coming out many nights criticizing the team and then Dwight Howard doing the same. Whatever went wrong for this team this season, it’s definitely not looking good. I’m not a big fan of players coming out and speaking badly about teammates and coaches. Kobe has done this throughout his career and it’s getting even worse now. Bryant just needs to play his game, which he’s having a phenomenal MVP caliber season and let everything else play out. He can have an all players meeting and vent out to them what he feels about them, but going to the media; come on Kobe!
Well we see that it’s not looking to super in the city of angels and Howard can take some of the blame for that. Not just his anemic free throw shooting or him hustling back on plays. Looking at the numbers this year for Dwight, he’s having a good year statistically and wouldn’t be surprised if he would be the Defensive Player of the Year again. Averaging 2.6 of blocked shots can help. But something isn’t looking right for the man they call “Superman”. That back of his looks a bit off as you can see in his play.
I know Howard isn’t getting the touches that he’s used to getting in Orlando, when he was the main and only offensive option they had. Now you have a legend in Kobe Bryant where he is looking to put up about 30 shots a game. That changes everything in the Howard saga in L.A. Will this team make the playoffs? Maybe, but with a 15-17 record they still have time to turn it around. It better be quick because there are some good teams in the west and they’re gunning for the top. Controversy sometimes can be good but with Howard and Kobe not getting along this will turn out to be an ugly season. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Howard traded by the deadline to the Nets or Mavericks. Just a thought people! How do you think the Lakers season will turn out and if you see Howard traded?
