Where are They Now: Dan Marino

1983 wasn’t just the year that I was born but the year of the Quarterback Draft Class that featured legendary quarterbacks Jim Kelly, John Elway and Dan Marino.
Dan Marino wasn’t just any quarterback that played in the NFL for 17 seasons; he was one of the greatest that has ever done it. Marino is a Hall of Fame player that was inducted in 2005 and was the toast of the town in Miami for almost two decades.

When Dan Marino played for the University of Pittsburgh in his college years, many experts had him high on the draft board for the 1983 class. But there was a problem, he just had a mediocre senior season and that hurt him for the draft.

Many thought that the strong armed quarterback was going to play in the USFL but little did they know he wouldn’t sign a contract with the Los Angeles Express. Marino knew what his aspirations were and that was to play big time in the NFL and that’s what he did as he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round as their 27th pick.

Was this a disappointment for him? Most definitely! He thought that he should been chosen a lot higher in the first round but he made due of it and had something to prove to the teams that passed on him and that’s what he did.

Marino came out in his rookie season and passed for 2,210 yards in just 11 games of play. Might I add that he also was selected in the Pro Bowl as a rookie. That was unheard of in those days and Marino soaked it all in.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback made his presence known in the NFL as the aggressor and wasn’t folding under the pressure and bright lights. He came right back the next season and had the season of his young career. Where he won the NFL MVP in 1984 and passed for his once then record setting 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns. He was golden and the world knew who he was.

With all the success that Marino had in his career. He couldn’t get the one thing that meant the most to him. It wasn’t the stats that he loved but he wanted the Super Bowl championship. It just wasn’t in the cards for him and that’s something that Marino couldn’t accept for many years.

Today Marino is having a blast at life to where he’s currently an analyst for CBS’s Sunday pregame show The NFL Today. That’s not the only thing he doing today but where there is positives there are negatives. In January 2013 he came out and admitted to having an affair with former CBS employee Donna Savattere and fathering a child named Chloe with her.

It wasn’t just the affair that people were mad and disgusted about with Marino. It was that he paid Savattere millions to keep her mouth shut about the affair and the baby for 8 years. Now it’s just a messy situation for the once squeaky clean Hall of Famer.

Is Retirement Calling Derek Jeter?

The New York Yankees might be rolling with some early wins in the season but they are having a hard time keeping their players on the field because they’re injured. Yankees star Derek Jeter is out again with a crack in his ankle and won’t be back until July. But who really knows if that’s the time he’ll be back.
We can’t forget that father time has caught up with Jeter as he’s 38 years old. Many fans just didn’t think this would be Jeter going through this because he’s the captain and for the most part has been reliable to be on the field throughout his career.

So there are many questions being asked today if Jeter is going to be the same player once he gets back from injury and if he’ll be the defender he once was. Derek understands that there are big expectations on him to come back from this and be the player that he once was.

Jeter is very disappointed in this injury that has plagued him and now he’s going to be in a boot and watching his team compete from his couch. This is a player that might that has a lot of pride and wants to be out there with the club to give them a spark that is much needed.

I must say with all the injuries that the New York Yankees are facing currently; they’re finding ways to win. They seem as if they are coming together as one and everyone is picking the load.

Is Derek Jeter over the mountain? I don’t know as of yet but at his age I don’t think that he has more to prove and maybe offer the Yankees. This is a living legend but maybe it might be time to hang up the cleats and think about life after baseball.

Do you think Jeter will come back stronger than ever or be plagued with more injuries to his 38 year old body?

K-Mart: A Huge Lift for the New York Knicks

Toughness seems to be back in New York with the addition of Kenyon Martin in late February. He has displayed great leadership on the floor and has become a defensive stopper for the Knicks.
The man they call K-Mart is just happy to be back in the NBA at the age of 35. He feels that he still has it in him to be a great contributor for a team. Mike Woodson and the New York Knicks seen that in him and gave him a role in their scheme.

When Knicks star Tyson Chandler went out with a neck injury, Martin took over the center position and he didn’t disappoint. What Martin provides the Knicks is stability on the defensive side where the team is known for its offense. Melo loves the acquisition because he knows for the team to win it all they need defense and who is better to provide that for them.

Tomorrow will be a big game and a series opener for the New York Knicks, as they will host their rival the Boston Celtics in a first round playoff matchup. Martin knows it will be all hands on deck for the team to ride the ship and he will be ready to bang with KG down in the post.

Martin wants to show people around league that he isn’t this locker room cancer and prove to all that he’s a great teammate and not just a tremendous defender. For many years’ fans, critics and players have judged Martin for his tattoos, attitude on the court and his lack of smiling to be considered this bad guy.

I feel that K-Mart is the opposite of that and it took him over 13 seasons to show what he can do off the court to provide a lift to an organization that hasn’t won for over a decade. Boston will be a tough match for them but I think Martin and the Knicks will prevail in six.

Mariano Rivera Blows a Kiss Goodbye to Baseball

Mariano Rivera was just a kid from Panama that was just humbled as ever to play the game of baseball which he loved so much. Being a part of an organization like the New York Yankees was a dream come true for Rivera in 1995. Now fast forward 18 years later, we have witnessed greatness to the highest level.

Rivera who wears the number 42 in remembrance of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson was just a piece class that he showed in his major league career. Rivera wanted to be an example of how players should conduct themselves on-and-off the field.

Rivera will leave the game of baseball as the greatest closer to have ever done it with currently a staggering 608 saves in his career. Some look at Rivera as just a great closer but I look at him as one of the greatest pitchers to ever put on a uniform. When we think of what we want our star athletes to be, he is that person.

Mariano was never a player to get into any trouble and has just been the perfect team player. We aren’t just talking about any team but the New York Yankees. This is a team with a lot of expectations every season and a team that has 27 World Championships under their belt. So you know the lights are bright in the city that never sleeps.

Rivera through his career has taken on the toughest challenges and faced some of the greatest players in baseball history. He never faltered under pressure and the stage was never too big for him to perform. I will and as many of these great sports fans and players out there will miss Mariano Rivera for what he’s brought to baseball and sports.

Sadly I don’t think we’ll see in our lifetime another pitcher of his magnitude to do what he’s done; especially for a team like the New York Yankees. I’m glad that he came back after a horrific injury last year. With five championships and a glorified career the man they call “Mo” is ready for the next chapter in his life and that’s retirement.

What was your greatest moments watching Mariano Rivera in his career?

Broke: Sports Players Burning Money

Sports athletes for years have been facing financial difficulties when it comes to keeping their money. Athletes from all sports are not immune to bankruptcy or even losing all of their fortunes. Many Americans just wish they would have just a small piece of the money that these athletes receive.
The question is who’s to blame when these past and current players have seen their bank accounts plummet because of erratic spending, bad investments or for being too generous to people.

To name some of the athletes that were in the spotlight because of bankruptcy recently was Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Allen Iverson, Scottie Pippen, Curt Schilling, O.J. Simpson, Vince Young and Terrell Owens. That was just a small portion of athletes that filed but we all know there are many more.

Many athletes don’t have financial literacy and they’re burning money fast. But if you ask them they think they are just having fun and living life. They even might think that we are jealous of their success. But it’s the total opposite.

I know that many of these players had some smart people around them telling them to slow down or they will lose it all. But athletes feel that their investments will hold them through the tough times and they won’t go broke.

Let’s talk about how athletes first come into these millions. First many of them are teenagers when they see that first million dollar check. At 19 years old what kid you know that gets that kind of money is thinking about saving it. They look at all the things they can buy and even want to help out family and friends.

Players are thinking that if they blow a few thousands and even millions, they can make it up on the next lucrative contract. But in the NFL contracts aren’t guaranteed and in the NBA who says that you can’t get hurt trying to get that big contract.

Not trying to knock these athletes that made bad decisions but they should’ve known better and now they’re trying to find ways just to pay off debts. Players don’t need 7-8 cars and a $10 million mansion. I’m not saying that they can’t live good and luxurious but come on! I know what people are saying right now; but it’s their money, so why not?

Put it this way, when athletes are done and retired from sports what the next thing for them. Many of them don’t even have college degrees, so they are depending on their past millions to work for them and keep them afloat for the rest of their lives.

But as you can many of athletes just live for the moment and don’t think about tomorrow and that’s the problem in sports. It’s sad to see one of our past heroes go through this in front of the world to see. I just hope that they can get their lives back on track and teach current athletes that spending money sporadically isn’t the way to go.

The Tribute: When Chandler was at his Finest

Former New York Knicks forward Wilson Chandler in his tenure with the team was a serviceable player for them. At times he looked like an All-Star and times he was non-existent. But tonight we’re not going to talk about his up and downs with the once then losing Knicks. Tonight we can talk about that slam he put on JaVale McGee in 2010. Now that was a facial that most NBA fans and definitely New York Knicks fans remember. McGee did try to block that dunk but to no avail. So Tonight we recognize Wilson Chandler. Enjoy!
