A True Class Act MVP Retires a Charger
The 2006 league’s MVP LaDainian Tomlinson will re-sign with the San Diego Chargers and then announce his retirement. He was drafted in 2001 by the Chargers when they weren’t that good or relevant. They were still getting over the devastation that they faced with Ryan Leaf. The man they chose in the draft before maybe the greatest player of all-time Peyton Manning, but we’ve been trying to move on from that. Tomlinson will definitely go down as one of the greatest running backs to have ever played the game. L.T.’s all-time rankings are as following. He ranks 5th in rushing yards with 13,684 and 3rd in total touchdowns with 162.
What an amazing career L.T. has had. When I watched him play I thought of Barry Sanders all over again. What a treat to watch. With strength, speed and great footwork many opponents couldn’t stop him from reaching the end zone. You can even say that he made the stiff arm a lethal weapon in his arsenal. One of the classiest guys you will ever see in professional sports. We knew as sports fans that we have witnessed greatness in 2006, when he set the NFL single-season record with 31 touchdowns. I was sold after that year. You just felt that he was bringing that franchise to levels they haven’t experienced in years. He was a gem for them giving them great wins.
They later repaid him for his talents by releasing him in 2010. The release was due to him aging and plagued with injuries. L.T. would then go on to play for the New York Jets respectively as he would reach the AFC title game with them two straight consecutive years. The only knock on L.T. was his honesty. Yes we want our players to be honest, but not where it can hurt a team’s image and perception about them. He didn’t shy away from the camera with comments and knocks on his former teams. The next stop for Tomlinson is the Hall of Fame where he belongs with the other greats. Where do you think L.T. ranks amongst the greats?
