Charlotte Hornets associate head coach and NBA legend Patrick Ewing has been seeking a head coaching position for some time now. Ewing has been an assistant coach for over 13 years with four different teams in the NBA. He started his coaching career with the Washington Wizards in 2002.
Ewing hasn’t given up on his dream in
becoming a head coach, as he was just granted an interview to fill the open
coaching vacancy with the Memphis Grizzlies this week. Former and new head
coach of the Sacramento Kings, Dave Joerger
was fired from his position with the Grizzlies last week as a close source told
ESPN there was a divide between himself and the front office.
Do
I think Ewing will get the position with the Grizzlies; I don’t think so, and
if I was a betting man which I am indeed, I would say no. Unfortunately, in
sports today, it’s not about how much you’ve paid your dues. Now it’s all about
who’s the hottest name in coaching that’s available today. The thing is, most
of the time it’s the guy that was just fired from his post.
Ewing
does deserve a shot to coach on the highest level in professional sports.
Coaches around the league that’s worked with Ewing in the past say he’s a
determined hard worker and players love him. So why hasn’t he got a head
coaching job yet?
Ewing
was a legend on the court as he played center for most of his career with the
New York Knicks. He never won a title in the NBA but many recognize him as one
of the greatest and toughest basketball players to ever play the game. I could
only see Ewing becoming a head coach if current Hornets head coach Steve
Clifford was fired. Then Ewing would become the interim coach and would have a
chance to prove his worth then.
We’ll
all keep watching and keep our fingers crossed for the man that wasn’t scared to
put New York on his back.
